The Little Give Shannon Nelson - morning host of 1410 AM, The Buzz of Vancouver - started the Little Give rolling with a $500 donation, which was matched by a $500 donation by her husband George.
Her idea? She wanted to help someone directly, someone local and in need, instead of donating to a large, faceless charity. Not knowing who to give the money to, she put the idea up to her listeners, and the responses came rolling in throughout the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and beyond!
It seems there are hundreds of people - if not thousands - who want to do something to not only help others, but to reconnect with their communities. In the end, the two ideas chosen were; to assist a single mom and her two daughters in Cloverdale, and to provide tents, clothing and a barbeque for the homeless in Courtenay.
The first Little Give happened May 1st at the Langley Save On Foods, where Sarah and her daughter Hannah met Shannon, and were presented with a $500 cheque. Sarah was overwhelmed by Shannon’s generosity, and was even more surprised when Save On Foods matched the donation with $500 in Save On gift cards! John Nicholson, Sales Manager here at 1410 AM, was swept up in the moment and pitched in $500 of his own money as well. Linda Craig, who had originally suggested Sarah as a worthy recipient of the Little Give, worked tirelessly to rally the businesses of Cloverdale to pitch in, and persuaded Clova Cinema, Panago Pizza, Rusty’s Pub and The Adidas Store to donate gift certificates and merchandise. All told, Sarah and her daughters received close to $2000 in cash and gifts!
The second Little Give is happening May 15th in Courtenay, Vancouver Island, from 4pm till dusk. Simm's Park
Katie, (11), was saddened to see all the homeless people in her community, and decided she could best help them by providing tents, and throwing a big barbeque in the centre of town. This way, she reckoned, the homeless would not only be given food and shelter, but would also have a chance to get to know everyone.
Please join us if you’re on the Island for the Little Give II! It’ll be a great party!
